Minneapolis CPA Firms Merge to Form Larger Advisory Platform

MINNEAPOLIS, November 2, 2009 — Carver Moquist & O’Connor LLC (CMO) — a 70-person CPA firm with offices in Edina and Plymouth, has merged with TK Advisors Ltd (TK) — a 35-person CPA firm in Minneapolis. The merger reinforces a trend toward consolidation in the accounting industry fueled by a desire to strengthen service niches and to provide clients with broad resources through one advisory team.

The new firm will operate under the name Moquist Thorvilson Kaufmann Kennedy & Pieper LLC (“MTK”) with offices in Edina and Plymouth. This merger will make MTK one of the Twin Cities’ largest local accounting and consulting firms with more than 100 accountants and staff.

“The merger with TK will position our combined firm to better serve and expand our client bases, leveraging a talented pool of CPAs and consultants and ensuring that we are among the leading public accounting firms in the Twin Cities,” said Kevin Moquist, Managing Partner of CMO. “Our firms were very well aligned in terms of client base and cultures, making this combination a natural step in our evolution,” he said.

Members of the two firms met several years ago as the only two Minnesota-based accounting members of the BDO Seidman Alliance, a national professional services firm with more than 400 independent alliance firm locations nationwide. MTK will continue its membership, providing a global base of advisory services to clients.

“We will continue to offer traditional CPA-firm services including assurance (including SEC reporting), accounting (including a fixed-fee internet accounting solution for small businesses around the country), and tax, but also several specialty consulting niche services such as comprehensive financial planning, IT strategic consulting, third party administration of qualified deferred compensation plans, and qualified Great Plains™ support services,” said John Thorvilson, Co-Managing Partner at TK Advisors.
